It's a very religious-type question. Specifically, one where a) any attempts at scientifically/rationally settling the question fail or become so convoluted as to be useless, b)the individual's self-identity is often tied to their identification, and c) most people's attitudes are circumscribed by the views they grew up with.

I don't know about identity, but when i was young gender was the social role that society assign to males and females.

so in every corner of Earth there are human females and males, but there are places where society expect women, to wear skirts, and other were not.

the differentiation used to be between the biological and social. it was useful distinction to have, and it's sad it fall victim to the weaponiztion of language.
