Kamala Harris' Gratifying Decline
Kamala Harris has dropped significantly in the polls lately. Where before she was seen as a rising star with a capable chance of becoming the nominee, she is now polling at around 5%, down from 17%. I am not a fan of Harris so I admit my perspective may be biased, but I find this development not only delicious but also gratifying from a rationalist standpoint. The article explains the basis for her drop in the polling, and there's a theme:
- She (bizarrely) attacked Biden for not being in favor of federally mandated busing in 1970s, realized busing was incredibly unpopular, then backtracked her support.
- She waffled so much on Medicare for All, going from supporting abolishing private insurance, to cosponsoring a bill with Bernie Sanders, to privately admitting to wealthy donors she wasn't actually comfortable with it.
- Then there was the torpedo of an attack that was Tulsi Gabbard. She attacked Harris' prosecutorial record by factually recounting it. Harris' response was utterly incoherent to me. Her immediate response at the debate was to belittle Gabbard for "just giving fancy speeches or being in a legislative body and giving speeches on the floor" (??). Afterwards, her campaign pivoted from the theory that Gabbard is a Russian plant to the idea that Gabbard only attacked because she was desperately polling low, and as far as I could find never directly addressed the criticism.
The gratifying aspect to all of this is that the public at large seems to somewhat care about consistency and has punished Harris as a result of her inconsistency. I'm obviously at risk of reading way too much into this but this small bit of observation is heartening to me because it leads me to revisit my priors in a good way. I come from the standpoint of voters being both irrational and ignorant (those are different concepts) so every little bit helps. I'm bracing myself for the next piece of disappointment obviously.
